Upon entering the church, the organ immediately draws attention.
Because of the grey patina and the weather-beaten tin of the front
pipes the organ radiates an impressive and long history. The organ,
from an unknown builder, goes back to 1531. It is one of the most
ancient still playable organs of the Netherlands. A curiosity of the
organ are the panels on the left and the right sides. The painted pipe
work dates from 1634.
Periods of change
About the times of change one can only guess. A mention on one of the
panels at the front of the organ in 1634 "met leteren en schilderyen
verciert" makes the claim that the hatches have been painted/restored
in 1634.
According to the text "dit orgel gants gerepareert" the organ would
have been totally renovated in the year 1686.
In 1731 Nicolaas Willenbroek was ordered by noblewoman Ripperda to
install a new C and Cis wind chest with corresponding mechanism and
manual. Willenbroek was a fellow worker of Franz Caspar Schnitger who
died in 1729.
In 1775, 1807 and 1844 major "dry repairs" were carried out by
Lohman.
In 1857, Freytag constructed three big pine bellows and the
corresponding wind trunk. The oak channel to the chest had to be
increased in size. To situate these bellows behind the organ the bay
of the choir was largely covered with a balcony.
Freytag replaced also the Quint 1' bas/ Sesquialter 2 ranks discant by
a stopped Flute 4' and the Mixtuur 4-5-6 ranks by a Gamba 8 ft
discant.
In 1974/1975, restoration by organ builder Albert Hendrik de Graaf.
Repair of the leaking wind chest without altering the original
construction. New switches and nameplates. Restoration of the manual
and the pedal. Restoration of some damaged pipes. Change of the Gamba
discant by a Sesquialter 2 ranks discant.
In agreement with the restorers of the church the bellows in the
SE-corner of the choir were situated on the ground floor.
The organ of Krewerd survived several wars and floods; however in 1967
the final curtain seemed to fall. The state of the church building was
abominable. People even spoke about demolition of the building and the
selling of the organ. But the church warden of the independent Dutch
Reformed Community Krewerd, farmer Marten Alje Bos protested fiercely
against this threat. And with success. Bos was supported by others,
including the mayor at that time, Mr. Brons.
Church and tower were restored by Monumentenzorg (monument care).
Organ builder/restorer Albert Hendrik de Graaf (* reference footnote
to biography of Mr. De Graaf) took very good care of the organ.
He writes:
From 1968 onwards they put the organ in my care. I was allowed to mend
the instrument during the period of 1972-1975. This restoration had a
preservation intention. It was very important that the sound was not
going to be damaged. It seemed to be better to replace the pipes
without alteration, after restoration of the wind drawer. In only a
few cases were repairs unavoidable.

Installing a sampleset
Before download and install, note the following:
1. Download all .CompPkg.Hauptwerk files.
2. Leave these files in the same folder and
3. Do not change the file names and
4. Do not unpack by hand.
5. Check the MD5 checksums with the WinMD5 program, free to download
from
http://www.winmd5.com
or http://www.fastsum.com If a checksum is incorrect, discard the wrong download file
from the PC and download that file again.
6. Start Hauptwerk (File/Install organ....), select in the folder where
you just downloaded the files,
the file with extension .CompPkg_Hauptwerk_rar in Hauptwerk's 'component installer'.
Hauptwerk automatically finds the other files.
7. If you get error messages, scroll to the end of the log file (this
opens automatically if something goes wrong when unpacking) to see
what goes wrong.
Usually a file is missing, or there is a file in the wrong folder or
a file is damaged.
8. Before loading the sampleset, check the
system information
regarding the expected memory usage etc.

Beautiful consoles specifically designed for Hauptwerk are
commercially available.
In the Netherlands these are available through, for example,
Those who are technically inclined can provide their keyboard with
MIDI capability using hardware from, for example,
MIDI-Hardware.com
or MGB . We ourselves have
done this using a Heyligers organ dating from around 1975 (using WIRA
hardware). The conversion was about 300 Euro and everything has worked
perfectly for years.
Speakers/headphone
The superb sound quality of Hauptwerk is best experienced through
high-quality headphones, such as AKG or Sennheiser.
We prefer connecting the sound card to a (possibly multi-channel)
sound system. The above mentioned companies can also advise you on any
purchases in this area.
What you definitely should not do is listen to Hauptwerk
through the built-in speakers of the monitor or a set of €10 computer
speakers!

Virtual console original
Here you see a representation of the original console from the organ
of Krewerd. The original organ has a so called short-octave. This
so-called "short octave" is actually a "long octave". Earlier
keyboards went down to F (with the keys F-G-A-B-H) (German key names).
When organists wanted lower keys, the makers added them (C-D-E) in a
very efficient manner. We now call this "short octave" but there are
no keys that were left out; there were keys that were added. Later, of
course, *more* keys were added (F sharp, G sharp,), etc. On the
original Kreward organ, Key E plays C, Key F plays F, Key F sharp
plays D Key G plays G, Key G sharp plays E. The rest is normal. The
pedalboard is fixed and contains the keys C, D, E, F, G, A, A sharp,
B, C, C sharp, D. To use the original manual you have to connect from
HW5 by selecting Organ Settings/Connect Keyboard MIDI inputs to Organ
Keyboards MAN ORG with one of your manuals. To use the original pedal
you have to connect from HW5 by selecting Organ Settings/Connect
Keyboard MIDI inputs to Organ Keyboards PEDAL ORG with your
pedalboard.
Virtual console normal
This is a normal version of the organ of Krewerd. The pedal board is
connected to the manual. To use the standard manual you have to
connect from HW5 by selecting Organ Settings/Connect Keyboard MIDI
inputs to Organ Keyboards MAN STD with one of your manuals. To use
this standard pedal you have to connect from HW5 by selecting Organ
Settings/Connect Keyboard MIDI inputs to Organ Keyboards PEDAL STD
with your pedalboard.
Virtual console extended
Here is the extended version with all 7 stops independently available
on both manuals and the pedal.
To play these standard manuals you have to connect from HW5 by
selecting Organ Settings/Connect Keyboard MIDI inputs to Organ
Keyboards MAN1 EXT with your first manual and MAN2 EXT with your
second.
To use 27 keys pedals you have to connect from HW5 by selecting Organ
Settings/Connect Keyboard MIDI inputs to Organ Keyboards PEDAL EXT
with your pedalboard.
